The Radioactive Chicken Heads are a punk rock band from Los Angeles, California.[1]
They are best known for their outrageous live shows and music videos, during which they perform wearing cartoonish mutant chicken and vegetable masks. They frequently have on-stage battles mid-song with enemies such as Badd Bunny, Liquid Fat, Evil Carrot, and Chucky Cheeze.[2]
Originally formed in 1993 under the name Joe and the Chicken Heads, the group was influenced by the theatrical bands Green Jelly and GWAR as well as the children's songs of Barry Louis Polisar and rock parodies of "Weird Al" Yankovic.
The band changed their name to the Radioactive Chicken Heads in 2004. According to their official explanation, "We were forced to be named the Radioactive Chicken Heads because of new government regulations which require all radioactive farm products to be labeled clearly." [3] However in the Philip K. Dick novel, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? mutants with sub-standard intelligence, due to radioactive dust in the atmosphere, are referred to as "chicken heads"
The Chicken Heads made their television debut on the Halloween 1998 episode of the Extreme Gong show, performing their song "Pest Control" . Although they were "gonged" in mid-performance, they finished the song anyway, claiming that they were playing so loud that they couldn't hear the gong. In 2000, they released their first CD, Keep On Cluckin'.
The Radioactive Chicken Heads released the album "Growing Mold" in March 2005 and were featured in Blender Magazine's October 2005 issue in the "Weird Band Alert" column.
In November 2006, the Radioactive Chicken Heads appeared on The Tyra Banks Show television show performing "Our Last Song" on the "Tyra's Got Talent" episode in a spoof of the America's Got Talent program.
In the summer of 2008, they released the album Music For Mutants which featured the song "Headless Mike" about the true story of Mike the Headless Chicken.
In the Fall of 2008, the Radioactive Chicken Heads embarked on their first national tour, opening for fellow theatrical comedy rock bands Green Jellÿ and Rosemary's Billygoat in 60 cities across the United States.
The band recorded the theme song for the upcoming movie, "Atom the Amazing Zombie Killer" and released it on Poultry Uprising, a rarities album available as a limited edition CD and as a digital download in 2009.
The Radioactive Chicken Heads paid tribute to their earliest songwriting inspiration, Barry Louis Polisar by compiling and recording songs for We're Not Kidding! A Tribute to Barry Louis Polisar, a various artists tribute album which was released in April 2010.[4]
